2026 Midyear Meeting Recap

AAFCO’s Midyear Meeting brought together regulators, industry, and partners from across the U.S. and around the world to advance shared priorities in animal food oversight and regulatory consistency.

Business Meeting Outcomes

AAFCO membership approved a new official definition of “Fish” for use in animal food, clarified policy language for dried insects in certain specialty feeds (with feed grade and labeling expectations), and published the 9th Edition of the AAFCO Feed Inspectors Manual.

Committee & Workgroup Updates

The Animal Feed Committee announced a Medicated Feed Labeling Workshop planned for August of this year and shared ongoing work to review Model Bill language related to poultry age classes.

The Ingredient Definition Committee approved several ingredient definition updates, accepted additional FDA GRAS items, and noted upcoming work to develop clearer industry guidance for direct-fed microbial naming conventions. IDC also discussed collagen and its potential use in animal nutrition.

The Pet Food Committee created a workgroup to explore whether a senior life stage should be added to the AAFCO dog food nutrient profiles.

AAFCO also announced the public launch of the AAFCO Virtual Assistant (AVA), powered by Swarm, now available to all Digital Publication Package subscribers.
