AAFCO Pet Food Labeling Guide

The AAFCO Pet Food and Specialty Pet Food Labeling Guide was developed in collaboration with feed control officials from different states and industry. The labeling guide provides information on the AAFCO Model Regulations for Pet Food and Specialty Pet Food as well as a uniform and consistent way of looking at claims on pet food labels. This is helpful for both feed control officials and industry so it is understood what may be accepted by regulators across the US.

The labeling guide has been updated with the new model regulations from the Pet Food Label Modernization (PFLM) project. The labeling guide covers claims such as Natural, Organic, Tartar Control, and Human Grade/Quality statements as well as answering the question “What is a Claim?”. It also gives label examples and in-depth information on the Pet Food Regulations such as Product Name and Ingredients, Descriptive Terms, Nutrients, and Feed Ingredients.

This labeling guide is helpful for everyone who wants to stay current with labeling requirements, whether you are starting a new treat or pet food business or are a long-established company in the pet food industry.

Labels addressed in this guide are for the various classes of food-producing and livestock animal non-medicated feeds and specialty product types that are fed to these animals, such as mineral premixes and free-choice feeds, and the labeling of some feed ingredients.

This guide does not address the labeling of pet food or specialty pet food.
